Glenmorangie Astar Returns

07-08-2017 By Whizzky Staff Writer

Lovers of the previously discontinued Glenmorangie Astar can celebrate as Glenmorangie has revived this much loved expression.

The Glenmorangie Astar was originally launched in 2008 and discontinued in 2012 because it was difficult to source the "designer" barrels used to age the expression. Glenmorangie Astar is entirely aged in designer Missouri Ozark casks from the Ozark mountains of Missouri.

The designer Missouri Ozark casks are crafted from slow-growth oak trees, selected for their porous structure. The coopers season the barrel staves for about 2 years by exposing them to the elements before they are assembled, toasted and heavily charred. They are then used to age bourbon for four years before emptying and shipped to Glenmorangie to age the Astar expression.

The director of distilling, whisky creation and whisky stocks at Glenmorangie, Dr Bill Lumsden described the expression as "like Glenmorangie Original on steroids". The new Astar expression is non-chill-filtered and bottled at 52.5% abv, and will be available in the UK from September
