Ardbeg has released a new permanent expression to their core range called Ardbeg An Oa. Pronounced An Oh, the expression pays homage to the Mull of Oa on Islay.
Ardbeg An Oa is an expression produced from the vatting of whiskies from different cask types including Pedro Ximenez, virgin oak and ex-Bourbon. The magic that produces An Oa happens in a gathering French Oak vat in Ardbeg's Gathering Room.
Ardbeg’s Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation & Whisky Stocks, Dr Bill Lumsden, describes it as "rounded and subtly smoky aromas reflect[ing] all the contrasts of the Mull of Oa, with notes of creamy toffee, aniseed, dates and hints of peach and banana. The whisky’s smooth, creamy texture leads to a huge syrupy sweetness on the palate, as milk chocolate, orange and smoky tea leaves mingle with sweet spices, cigar smoke and – unusually – grilled artichokes, before a lingering, seductive and smoky finish. It is years since the world’s smokiest, peatiest Islay malt added to its core range".
Brendan Maccarron, Head of Maturing Whisky at Ardbeg, mentioned in an interview with us earlier this year, that they were working on a new expression that could soon become his favourite Ardbeg expression.
Ardbeg An Oa is bottled at 46.6% abv and is non chill filtered. The expression will be available in retail stores by Septemeber.
